Switchboard Draftsperson Tutorial
These are Shan's study notes on learning to become a Switchboard Draftsperson — organized as a progressive learning path from first principles to a working AI-assisted drafting workflow.
Why This Interests Me
The first step in remodeling my home smart system starts from the incoming power supply — so switchboards are where it naturally begins.
It's also a return to familiar ground: back in university I studied Power Electronics Technology and Factory Power Supply, so picking this up again is part learning, part revisiting old memories.
Learning Plan
The material is sequenced so that each step builds on the previous one:
- Understand Input & Output — Learn what a drafting project receives (Design Intent, schedules, site info) and what it must deliver (the manufacturing drawing package). This is the standard interface everything else follows.
- Work through simple cases — Logically understand 2–3 small, complete examples end to end, so the workflow becomes concrete before touching any drawing tool.
- Draw with QElectroTech — Reproduce the basic drafting tasks in QElectroTech to build hands-on drawing skill.
- Learn the AU/NZ standards interface — Study the interface defined by the AU/NZ standards (AS/NZS 3000, AS/NZS 61439) and understand the key concepts they govern.
- AI-based workflow — Combine the above into an AI-assisted drafting workflow.
Current Progress
Part 1 covers steps 1 and 2:
- Input & Output Specification — the standard interface between client and draftsperson.
- Case 1: A Small Shop — a complete worked example that strictly follows that specification.
Part 2 is a hands-on quick-experience chapter:
- 5-Day Quick Experience — five short days, each with one small drawing, a few questions, and one core concept.
- Day 1: The Simplest Distribution Circuit (SLD) — read a minimal single line diagram and understand what a switchboard fundamentally does.
Later parts will add QElectroTech drafting, the AU/NZ standards concepts, and the AI-based workflow.
